Willie, empowering change through spoken word in Kenya

Arts and culture are essential for building a safe and just world. The most effective way to promote democratic rights, freedom, and universal human rights globally is through the support and protection of local and grassroots artists. Many artists face significant pressure and risks, and to defend democratic rights, they need both security and space to carry out their work.

Kristiaan, driving impact through research in the Netherlands

Kristiaan joined the Impact through Research trajectory of The Hague Changemakers to discover how academic research can drive meaningful social change. Building on his background in political science and migration justice, he collaborated with others to uncover the lived experiences of migrants and contribute to reshaping narratives around inclusion and social cohesion. This was a decision that would leave a lasting mark on both him and the communities he worked with.

Miluska, advocating for legal protections for the LGBTIQA+ community in Peru

In Peru, there are no legal barriers to same-sex relationships or censorship of LGBTIQA+ rights. However, it remains an unsafe environment for the LGBTIQA+ community, with obstacles to same-sex marriage, adoption, and the recognition of gender identity. In addition to not being guaranteed equal access to education, housing, healthcare, and employment, LGBTIQA+ continue to face violence, discrimination, and hate due to prevailing stereotypes and stigmas in the country.
