Community Builder in The Hague for Ukrainian newcomers

Are you a connector by nature, good at guiding a group of people with a multicultural background and do you speak fluent English, Dutch and one of the following languages: Ukrainian or Russian?

Do you also enjoy contributing a few hours a month to society in The Hague and are you available at short notice? Then we are looking for you!

Who we are:

Samen Hier is an initiative of Justice & Peace that links newcomers with a refugee background, alone or with their family, to a small group of three to five residents of The Hague. Together they spend twelve months together as a group. For example, to think along about studies or work, to practice the language and to do fun things together. This makes it easier for these newcomers to find their way in Dutch society and to build lasting and equal relationships. Given the circumstances in which many Ukrainian newcomers find themselves after more than a year of war, we are starting Samen Hier Ukraine in The Hague to support this group.

Community Builder

During the year, groups receive guidance from Samen Hier, including a community builder. This is someone who acts as a contact person and supports groups with possible language barriers and bridging cultural differences. You are the first point of contact for the group(s), supporting in making appointments and giving them tips on how to have fun contact. From time to time there are check-in calls when you reach out to the group(s) to see how they are doing.

What do we offer:

Once joined, we will guide you and ensure that you have the right tools to do your job. Every two months we meet with all community builders to exchange experiences and tips. In addition, we provide forms as a guideline for check-in calls with the group(s) and the newcomer. In addition, we organize training days on various subjects, for example, on intercultural communication.

Joining Samen Hier means you become part of a progressive human rights organization where you can contribute to the lives of newcomers in The Hague. We organize fun activities and events to which you are also invited. In addition, you will receive a volunteer contract, a volunteer allowance and reimbursement of travel expenses.

What do we ask:

  • (Inter)cultural sensitivity: you are able to create an environment in which cultural differences, norms and values can be discussed;
  • An open mindset: you easily make contact with people and enjoy supporting and guiding people;
  • You are not afraid of taking initiatives;
  • Language skills: you’re fluent in English and one of the following languages: Ukrainian and/or Russian. Knowledge of Dutch is an advantage;
  • You are flexible in terms of hours and times;
  • Previous experience working with newcomers is welcome.

Is this something for you?

If you like to dedicate yourself to other people and you have 4 hours a month to guide one or more Samen Hier groups for a year, sign up as a community builder at Samen Hier via info@samenhier.nl with a short introduction of who you are and why you would like to be a community builder.
