Spoken Word Contest 2020 (DEADLINE CLOSED)
“We cannot walk alone”
Can you make an impact with your speech as big as Martin Luther King did?
Black, white, and everything in between – we have to learn to live in harmony instead of opposition. Martin Luther King had a dream: that people would no longer be judged by the colour of their skin. Until he was murdered in 1968, King was the leader of the civil rights movement in the United States. This movement ensured the acquirement of voting rights for African-Americans. King’s most famous words are “I have a dream” but he also said “We cannot walk alone”. With his peaceful protest, he even received the Nobel Peace Prize. Follow in King’s footsteps, and inspire others with your speech to join you in action, in order to make sure that people will no longer be judged by their skin colour, their sexuality, or their limitations.
How to join?
Write your spoken word speech inspired on ‘We cannot walk alone’ and make a video of your performance on your phone. Submit this video and the written text before the 30th of November to MLK@justiceandpeace.nl. The length of the video should be 2 to 3 minutes, and the transcribed speech 800 to 1.000 words.
Our Jury, with spoken word artist Elten Kiene, will judge the submission based on the elaboration on the theme, the connection to King’s ideas and sayings, originality, and presentation. The three winners will receive a price of €500, €350, €150 and your performance will be broadcasted during the online Martin Luther King lecture on the 10th of December 2020.
