Eindhoven becomes the 13th Shelter City in the Netherlands

We are proud to announce that Eindhoven has become the 13th city in the Netherlands to join our initiative in the protection and support of human rights defenders at risk, Shelter City.

The city of Eindhoven is known for its attention to global issues and its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals. With the creation of a new Shelter City and the support provided to human rights defenders, the city makes an important contribution to reaching the 16th goal: Peace and Security. 2022 marks its pilot year as a Shelter City.

Shelter City Eindhoven will be coordinated by ContourdeTwern, with the support of the municipality, Vluchtelingen in de Knel, VredesburoAmnesty International Eindhoven and Hoogstraatgemeenschap. The team of Shelter City Eindhoven will welcome their first guest in April.

About Shelter City

Shelter City was founded by Justice & Peace in 2012 as a concrete and accessible way to support human rights defenders at risk. Today, it is a global movement of cities, organisations and people that offer safe and inspiring spaces to human rights defenders at risk. During their three-month stay in one of the Shelter Cities across the globe, human rights defenders can re-energise, receive tailormade support and engage with local allies with the goal to reinforce their local actions for change on their return home. Through Shelter City, we strive to create a world where we can all safely contribute to just and peaceful societies. Since its beginning in 2012, Shelter City has grown to include 21 cities in 7 countries, 13 of which in the Netherlands, and has supported over 400 human rights defenders.
