THE HAGUE, Netherlands \u2013<\/strong> Press freedom is a vital component of any democracy and the role of journalists cannot anymore be emphasized to counter all the lies and to shed light to the truth in this day and age of massive disinformation efforts.<\/p>\n

But time and again we see the cost of journalists\u2019 quest for truth, most especially in countries where governments and heads of states see them as adversaries.<\/p>\n

At least 2,176 journalists and media workers<\/strong> were killed between 1992 and 2022, according to latest data collated by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). 57 killings occurred in the past ten months alone.<\/p>\n

These numbers do not cover the wider range of attacks journalists are subjected to, which my organization Rappler \u2013 a small newsroom based in the Philippines \u2013 is all too familiar with.<\/p>\n
